CHRISTOPHER MCVINISH – FINALIST IN 2023 WYNNE PRIZE

Christopher McVinish describes his paintings as ‘architectural landscapes’ a theme he has pursued as an artist since age 15. This work documents a slice of Katoomba’s Main Street in the Blue Mountains. Peeling paint and rumpled tin awnings above contrast with a carefully arranged Christmas display in the window below. A dark sky and an empty street lend a beguiling lonely air – what McVinish calls ‘a touch of film noir‘. Made over four months from sketches and photos in the early morning light, it conveys the artist’s observation of the ‘magic‘ in the everyday.

McVinish was a 2011 Archibald finalist and this is his second time in the Wynne.

The Exhibition runs from the 6th May – 3rd September. Following the Exhibition conclusion at the AGNSW the finalists of the Wynne Prize 2023 will travel to regional galleries in Victoria and NSW.
