CONGRATULATIONS GOOMPI UGERABAH: WINNER OF THE 2023 PADDINGTON ART PRIZE
WINNER OF THE 2023 PADDINGTON ART PRIZE
The Paddington Art Prize is a $30,000 National acquisitive prize, awarded annually for a painting inspired by the Australian landscape. Established in 2004 by Arts Patron, Marlene Antico OAM, this National prize takes its place among the country’s most lucrative and highly coveted painting prizes.
‘Mudgeedah’ by Goompi Ugerabah, Acrylic on canvas. SOLD
Judges comments: “Immediately struck by this work, the overlapping of weave sets up a gentle rhythm which reverberates throughout the entire painting.”
“The artwork represents areas on my birthplace and homelands where I go and gather ochres from. On Kombumerri and neighbouring Minjungbal tribal lands. The many river systems, water inlets and mountains is where I gather these clays and ochres from. Mixing them with water we create a paste for our body paint to do song and dance or ceremony. We say Mugeedah in language for ochre.” – Goompi
CHRISTOPHER MCVINISH – FINALIST IN 2023 WYNNE PRIZE
Christopher McVinish describes his paintings as ‘architectural landscapes’ a theme he has pursued as an artist since age 15. This work documents a slice of Katoomba’s Main Street in the Blue Mountains. Peeling paint and rumpled tin awnings above contrast with a carefully arranged Christmas display in the window below. A dark sky and an empty street lend a beguiling lonely air – what McVinish calls ‘a touch of film noir‘. Made over four months from sketches and photos in the early morning light, it conveys the artist’s observation of the ‘magic‘ in the everyday.
McVinish was a 2011 Archibald finalist and this is his second time in the Wynne.
The Exhibition runs from the 6th May – 3rd September. Following the Exhibition conclusion at the AGNSW the finalists of the Wynne Prize 2023 will travel to regional galleries in Victoria and NSW.

THE SYDNEY MORNING HERALD – Helen Pitt
Artist Kathrin Longhurst met fashion designer Bianca Spender at a women’s charity event earlier this year, and asked her who would be painting her portrait for this year’s Archibald Prize.
“So far no one,” the daughter of Australian fashion design matriach Carla Zampatti said. So Longhurst, just back from a trip to New York and inspired by pop art took the initiative and asked to paint her.
The result is an Archibald entry she calls Icon-ic that is a triptych, with the fashion designer wearing a hi-vis halo, to “make a statement about fast fashion versus the hand-made artisanal fashion” that is the trademark of both Spender and her mother.
“The halo is a metaphor for the impossible standards women are held to,” said Longhurst, the winner of the 2021 Archibald Packing Room prize with her portrait of singer Kate Ceberano.
Although many joke that winning the Packing Room prize is the kiss of death for winning the actual $100,000 first prize, Longhurst said it helped catapult her art to a different level entirely.
“I’ve entered the Archibald on and off for 20 years and winning the Packing Room prize was life-changing. People may not know my name but when I say I won the Packing Room prize they know the painting because Kate is a ‘darling of the Australian people’,” said the German-born artist…

“My entire painting career has been about painting powerful stories about women – it is about changing the discourse about how we portray women in the media, arts and culture, where for too long the woman – preferably nude – has been seen as the side gig to the male,” Longhurst said.

KEN DONE ‘ON THE EDGE OF COLOUR’ at GALLERY ONE
“I want the paintings to give you pleasure over time. It’s like a relationship, you’re not going to get everything on the first date! It’s over time, and that’s how a painting should be – a painting should be over time” — Ken Done.
Gallery One had the pleasure of hosting Ken Done on Friday 4th Nov 2022. At 82 years of age Ken is painting highly collectible work and loving every moment! Which is evident in these joyous works. Visit the gallery in November to view this beautiful collection of artworks.
